TMCH: Trademark Clearinghouse

The release of hundreds of new extensions for the customization of domain names, besides significantly increasing the opportunity of standing out on the web, has also led to the evaluation of new measures for the protection of brands, trademarks and intellectual property on the web.
To meet this demand, ICANN, the organization responsible for the management and coordination of domain names, established the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) the main purpose of which is to protect the rights of trademark holders during the launch of new domain extensions and avoid the risk of violations.

What is the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) ?

It’s a global database of data which stores documents and information related to trademarks and their holders.

Who can register with the TMCH?

All holders of the following are eligible for inclusion in the TMCH *:
  • trademarks;
  • marks protected by statute or treaty;
  • marks validated by a judicial proceeding;
  • any other mark that constitutes Intellectual Property (IP).

Costs and advantages

The cost of the Trademark Clearinghouse service varies depending on the duration of registration, however, being included in the database offers trademark holders lots of advantages like:

  • allows them to take part in the SUNRISE phase of new domain extensions;
  • enables them to take advantage of the Trademark Claims service which is activated following the SUNRISE phase.
    The Trademark Claims service is provided by the TMCH and activated for all new extensions to notify both the registrants of domain names, and the related trademark holders in case of trademark violations.
